AI Camera Installed on Fixed-route Buses for Automatic Recognition of Construction Sites

Overview

AI camera which is capable of automatically recognizing construction sites on fixed-route buses

By installing an AI camera which is capable of automatically recognizing construction sites on fixed-route buses, it becomes possible to reliably identify construction work that has not been notified to Osaka Gas Network (other construction work) and take action. It also becomes possible to reduce the labor required for conventional patrol operations.

Necessity to identify construction work

Various infrastructure facilities buried under roads

Various business operators, including gas, waterworks, sewerage, electricity, and communication companies, have infrastructure equipment under roads. Excavation work is performed on roads for maintenance of such equipment. When these business operators perform construction work in proximity to gas pipes, they are requested to hold consultations with Osaka Gas Network in advance to avoid damage to gas pipes during the excavation work. In some cases, other construction work is performed without notification. For this reason, Osaka Gas Network conducts inspection patrols on roads where medium-pressure gas pipes are buried in order to prevent damage to gas pipes.

AI-based detection of construction work

Patrols by route buses

Various operations are required to protect the vast network of medium-pressure gas pipes. It was necessary to increase the efficiency of the inspection process. We have installed AI cameras on fixed-route buses to automatically detect construction work on the route.

Working principle of AI-based detection of construction work

The AI automatically recognizes objects such as traffic cones and construction work signboards as characteristics of construction work.
Because the AI camera is equipped with GPS, construction work can be detected only on roads where medium-pressure gas pipes are buried.

Current patrols

In current patrols, a car starts from the start point of a designated route in the morning and reaches the goal in the evening. If the construction work has not yet started or if the construction work has been completed at the moment the patrol passes a relevant site, it is impossible to take measures to prevent damage on gas pipes.

New patrols

By installing an AI camera on fixed-route buses, which drive on specific routes, the routes can be inspected multiple times a day. This helps reduce the risk of damage to gas pipes caused by other construction work without notification.
Automatic recognition of construction work with the AI camera, which has replaced the human eye in conventional patrols, is highly likely to save labor.
